Common bases
Definition of a Base
A base is a substance that can neutralise acids to form salt and water.
Bases that are soluble in water are called alkalis.
They have a pHgreater than 7 and often feel slippery to the touch.
Strength of Bases
Bases are classified as strong or weak based on how completely they dissociate in water:
Strong bases dissociate fully, releasing a high concentration of hydroxide (OH−) ions.
Bases are used in industrial, household, and medical applications.
