Conjugate acid-base pairs

1. Acid-Base Reactions

  • Acids and bases always react together in pairs.
  • The acid donates a proton (H+),(H⁺), while the base accepts the proton.
  • These reactions occur simultaneously.

Definition: Acid-Base (Protolytic) Reaction

A reaction in which a proton (H+)(H⁺) is transferred between substances.

2. Conjugate Acids and Bases

a) Conjugate Acids

  • When an acid donates a proton (H+),(H⁺), it forms a conjugate base.
  • The acid and its conjugate base form a conjugate acid-base pair.

Examples:

  • HClH++ClHCl → H⁺ + Cl⁻
    • HCl=HCl = acid,Cl=acid, Cl⁻ = conjugate base
  • H2SO4H++HSO4H₂SO₄ → H⁺ + HSO₄⁻
    • H2SO4=acid,HSO4H₂SO₄ = acid, HSO₄⁻ = conjugate base

b) Conjugate Bases

  • When a base receives a proton (H+),(H⁺), it forms a conjugate acid.
  • The base and its conjugate acid form a conjugate acid-base pair.

Examples:

  • OH+H+H2OOH⁻ + H⁺ → H₂O
    • OH=OH⁻ = base,H2O=base, H₂O = conjugate acid
  • HSO4+H+H2SO4HSO₄⁻ + H⁺ → H₂SO₄
    • HSO4=base,H2SO4=HSO₄⁻ = base, H₂SO₄ = conjugate acid

3. Identifying Conjugate Acid-Base Pairs

Steps to Follow:

  1. Find the acid on the left-hand side of the equation. Label it acid.
  2. Identify its conjugate base on the right-hand side. Label it conjugate base.
  3. Draw a bracket to show the acid-base pair.
  4. Find the base on the left-hand side. Label it base.
  5. Identify its conjugate acid on the right-hand side. Label it conjugate acid.
  6. Draw a bracket to show the base-acid pair.
infoNote

Worked Example:

For the reaction:

HCl+NH3NH4++ClHCl + NH₃ → NH₄⁺ + Cl⁻

Key Points:

  • Acids form conjugate bases after losing H+.H⁺.
  • Bases form conjugate acids after gaining H+.H⁺.
  • A conjugate acid-base pair differs by one proton (H+).(H⁺).
